Karmann Ghia TOP ASSEMBLYKarmann Ghia TOP ASSEMBLY. Year Breaks & Description. All 1958 through most of 1959 Convertible Ghia Tops had Chrome Header Molding (was very rare until we reproduced it in 2009). During 1964 (VIN# 6264 620) the pivot mount (part of top that attaches behind Door opening) changed to accept a tube Main Pivot Arm (was previously forged). During 1965 (VIN# 145 644102) main assembly bolts replaced with Riveted Pins that held the top together at various pivot points. Another mid year change in 1967 (vin# 147 610 910) came with the Rear Tack Strip & Molding being replaced with a Tension Cable (both early and late function was to hold the top to the body) through the end of production in 1974. The small square Rear Window was replaced with a larger arched Window and the Molding above the rear window was removed. The body to top Tack Strip Molding on the other had was replaced through mid 1968 (to VIN#148 398 127) with an aluminum molding (now very rare) held in by the new tension cable. Even though the Top Frame was the same, the Top Cover is different and NOT interchangeable. 1969˝ (VIN# 149 431008) saw major changes. (Up to this point all Frames were interchangeable as complete units). Center Crank Latch replaced with 2 side Latches, fold down Glass Rear Window replaced sewn in plastic, Bow above rear window is higher and required new Top Cover upholstery dimensions. Only minor changes from here on, making all 69˝ to 74 tops interchangeable. Because Rear Glass is expensive & rare, we offer Top Covers for 69˝-74 on, fitted with a 67˝ - 69˝ Plastic Window.
