POR-15 How To's
POR-15 products are the industry leader in body repair and preparation for
any restoration project. In addition to body prep products, we offer a
complete line of Hi-Heat Paint for manifolds and exhaust, Fuel Tank Sealer, Fuel
preservative for when your ride goes into storage, and even Starter, Steering
Wheel, & Floor Pan Restoration Kits.
These products are amazing but
can be messy (if not handled correctly), and should be treated with care.
When using POR-15 on clean/sandblasted metal; treat first with "Metal
Ready" This helps tremendously with the bonding process to non-rusted
metal.
Before even opening the can of POR-15, protect all surfaces that
you don’t want this stuff on. This means; the floor around what ever you
are working on, and wearing Protective clothing that you don’t care about is a
good idea. I use an old raincoat. POR-15 has a runny consistency and will soak
right through clothing. Especially wear rubber gloves (Long ones!). Wear a
face shield to keep it out of your eyes, and from putting funny little spots all
over your face. The minor problems that go with the wonders of this
product are:
#1 If you get this stuff on your hands, or body, it will
have to wear off. Regular type thinners don’t even touch this stuff.
They do have a cleaner available, but only comes in gallons. Urethane and
Lacquer thinner’s are somewhat effective, but hard on your skin. It’s
better just to not get it on you in the first place. Use POR-15 only in a
well ventilated space. If spraying, wear a respirator rated for solvents.
#2 The whole container will harden if exposed to rust in any
way. The way to avoid this expensive mistake is to:
Transfer
a little bit at a time in a shallow, wide mouthed jar. This keeps the
contaminated POR-15 out of your supply jar. Do not use plastic or
Styrofoam containers. They will melt. While brushing POR-15 onto rusted
metal, the rust transfers to the fluid on the brush, which contaminates the
POR-15 in the jar. Doesn’t seem like such a big thing? If left to dry, it
will turn rock hard overnight! See, rust activates POR-15 and turns it into an
impenetrable barrier type coating. That’s what makes it so great. It mixes
with the rust to form a coating that will "NEVER RUST AGAIN"!!!!!
Use it
on rusted Floorboards, Suspension parts, Engine tin and everything else that you
don’t want to rust. POR-15 can be sanded, painted and is extremely impact
resistant. It will never crack, chip or peel and gets harder with
continued exposure to moisture.
To apply to rusty metal; just wire brush
off any loose scaly rust, and apply POR-15 with a brush or sprayer (thinner
required for spraying). Let dry for 3 to 6 hours, and repeat. POR-15
dries quicker in a humid environment.
POR-15 should be recoated with
paint, as it will fade and degrade if exposed to sunlight.
Try not to
get it on exposed bolt threads. When you try sometime in the future to get
the bolt out, the POR-15 will make removal difficult, or strip the
treads.
